Fun Fall Themed Parties

Chili Cook-Off

As a kid I played lots of sports, which means my competitive spirit runs deep.  There is nothing I like more than a challenge. That’s why this fun fall-themed party is one of my favs. What's better than a delicious bowl of soup and some friendly competition to go with it? And the best part? Your guests supply all the food!

To help spice up your chili cook-off I've listed some fun, easy ways to bring your hosting A-game!

Prizes

Giving a prize always amps up the competitiveness. Even if it is ridiculous, guests will love it! It doesn't have to be expensive, in fact my sister hosts a chili cook-off every Halloween and she gives out wooden spoons.  You better believe I still have it and every time I reach in the drawer I am reminded that I got 3rd. Ugh! Lol.

  • Best chili gets a golden spoon. (Literally take a wooden spoon and spray paint it gold - it’s that easy!)
  • Most unique ingredient gets a weird spice to put in their pantry.
  •  At least I placed, right?
  • Make your own tacky trophy with a can of beans, a spoon, some fake peppers and spray paint. Use a sharpie to mark the winners each year and pass it around. Husbands, if you are reading… please do not display this anywhere in your home that your wife does not approve of first. But definitely display it when losers from the chili cook off are visiting. Ha! (My competitiveness is real, I told ya!).

Team Names

Coming up with team names always brings a sense of humor to this party and just makes it more fun in general. Below are some examples to help get your creative juices flowing.
  • Netflix and Chili
  • Red Hot Chili Preppers
  • Beans and Queens.

Costume Party/Team t-shirts

Ask your guests to actually get their monies worth out of that $40 Halloween costume and suggest it as the party attire.  Don't like to dress up? Make t-shirts! I always love the camradery of teams making t-shirts. Either way, people love a good excuse to wear something fun. And there’s nothing more hilarious than Batman digging into a crock pot!

The "Fixins'" station

Being from southern Indiana, we used to put all kinds of fixins’ in our chili: cooked noodles, oyster crackers, Fritos®, Cheetos®, shredded cheese, hot sauce, chives, jalapenos and sour cream.  Make some cute labels for the add-ins and your toppings station will be on Instagram in no time. #mouthwatering

The "Fire" Station

Do you have friends (like me) who literally put hot sauce on EVERYTHING? And why are they so proud of it? Like, I swear there is some ego that goes along with hot sauce.  Anyway, if you don’t believe me set up a hot sauce bar for your guests and see for yourself. To add some pizzazz to your table cut up some different types of peppers, the bright colors will make for a beautiful display. Click. #chilicookoff. *Note: you may want to rank the peppers from 1-10 based on heat levels so guests know what they are getting themselves into.  I am getting heart burn just thinking about this!

You can really go all out with this fire station, if time permits.  An orange table cloth, some toy firetrucks, an extinguisher, and some gold confetti will really make this table hot! Use cheap plastic fire hats to display your peppers and finish your table off with a box of tums or a pitcher of water.  Guests will get a real kick out of your effort.
Set up for this event should be fairly easy because it doesn’t involve a lot of food prep.  You will need a few tables, some extension cords and a couple of power strips.  Have guests bring their crock pots of chili with serving ladles (this is important because you probably won’t have 10 of these on hand) Then you're all set!
Obviously, bowls and spoons are crucial for this event as well.  Since guests will want to try them all, you may even grab some small 9 oz. cups for tasting.  If you have more than 10 pots, you'll want to go even smaller with your tasting cups.

We would love to see the ways you make your Chili-Cook off social media worthy, so tag us @thersvpproject!

Cheers,
